Bleach Spiral

Materials Needed

  • Dark-colored 100% cotton garment (navy, black, or dark colors work best)
  • Household bleach (regular, not gel)
  • Water for diluting bleach (1:1 ratio recommended)
  • Squeeze bottle for bleach solution
  • Rubber bands
  • Thick rubber gloves
  • Eye protection
  • Old clothes or apron
  • Hydrogen peroxide or bleach stop solution
  • Well-ventilated area or outdoor space

Safety Notes

  • NEVER mix bleach with other chemicals, especially ammonia - creates toxic gas.
  • Work ONLY in well-ventilated areas or outdoors.
  • Wear eye protection - bleach can cause serious eye damage.
  • Use thick rubber gloves - bleach causes skin irritation.
  • Have running water nearby in case of accidents.
  • Never use bleach on silk, wool, or leather.
  • Supervise if working with younger makers.

Preparation

  1. 1

Choose a dark garment - navy blue and black cotton show the best results.

  2. 2

Work OUTDOORS or in a very well-ventilated area - bleach fumes are harmful.

  3. 3

Dampen your garment slightly with plain water.

  4. 4

Mix bleach solution: 1 part bleach to 1 part water in a squeeze bottle.

  5. 5

Have your bleach stop ready (hydrogen peroxide mixed 1:10 with water).

  6. 6

Cover your work surface with plastic.

Folding & Tying

  1. 1

    Lay the damp garment flat.

  2. 2

Pinch the center where you want your spiral and begin twisting.

  3. 3

Create a tight spiral disc shape, just like traditional tie-dye.

  4. 4

Secure with rubber bands in a cross pattern, creating wedge sections.

  5. 5

For bleach, tighter spirals often work better as the effect is more dramatic.

Applying the Dye

  1. 1

Working outdoors or in ventilation, apply bleach solution to desired sections.

  2. 2

You can do alternating wedges or apply to the entire surface for different effects.

  3. 3

Watch the fabric carefully - color removal happens quickly (5-15 minutes).

  4. 4

Flip and apply bleach to the back side for even results.

  5. 5

Check frequently - stop when you achieve desired lightness.

  6. 6

Don't leave bleach on too long or fabric may weaken.

Rinsing & Finishing

  1. 1

Once desired color is achieved, IMMEDIATELY rinse in cold water.

  2. 2

Apply bleach stop solution or soak in hydrogen peroxide mixture for 5 minutes.

  3. 3

This neutralizes the bleach and stops the reaction.

  4. 4

Rinse thoroughly until all bleach smell is gone.

  5. 5

Wash immediately with detergent in cold water.

  6. 6

    Dry normally.

[Phillipa's Tip]

"The magic of bleach tie-dye is the surprise colors that emerge. Navy often goes to salmon pink then orange. Black can reveal reds, oranges, or even yellows depending on the original dyes used. Start light - you can always add more bleach, but you can't undo it!"
